Board Member Stories: Everyone Belongs Here
from Lizhen Pang
I want to add to this part about "home". I have been in other states or cities where there are Chinese communities. Everywhere I go I'm involved in the Chinese communities.
But I feel like there is a unique part in the Tucson community which is really integrated, they're not separated from the Taiwanese or Hong Kong or older immigrants. Tucson Chinese community, surrounded by the Center, integrates all the older immigrants, new immigrants, immigrants from mainland, from Taiwan, from Hong Kong, from anywhere, even the local community and people with white backgrounds. I think this kind of inclusion and diversity is just very valuable to me because I think other communities that I was involved with were a little bit more "one color", all from the mainland, all with similar background. Or they all come for the university. For example, some of our community members are really, really early immigrants. They may help with grocery stores or are maybe a descendent of building the railroad. So I feel that diversity is very, very valuable and good.
